People living with severe autoimmune disorders often feel unseen and unheard, either because others don’t understand their struggles or because they often appear “fine” to the outside world, whereas they may be suffering silently.
argenx is a global immunology company committed to improving the lives of people with severe autoimmune conditions. In collaboration with Ruby Studio, argenx has given voice to those who suffer from these rare conditions through a podcast called Untold Stories: Life with a Severe Autoimmune Condition. In the wake of gaining significant popularity, the podcast has completed its second season and is planning for its third. The rare conditions highlighted include myasthenia gravis (MG) and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP).
The podcast is hosted by Martine Hackett, Associate Professor and Director of Public Health Programs at Hofstra University. As a researcher, professor, and public health expert, she has spent her career studying the complex realities of healthcare disparities. Each episode features a guest who shares their powerful story about navigating life with a rare, neuromuscular condition — from the difficulty of diagnosis to the challenges of managing a condition where symptoms are unpredictable and heterogeneous.
In their conversations with the host, guests reveal how every journey is unique and powerful, exploring how community and care are essential parts of each experience, along with self-advocacy and support. The symptoms of MG and CIDP have a very profound effect on those living with them. From changing family dynamics to learning to manage symptoms alongside other conditions, many varying factors can define what life is like with these rare conditions.
Throughout these podcasts, guests share their stories of fear, distress, and misdiagnosis — and their subsequent transformation into a place of hope, gratitude, and acceptance — as they continue to find a way forward. They explore how these conditions affect not only them as individuals, but those in their personal circles as well. In different ways, each guest has discovered a strength they didn’t know they had, a testimony to the depth and resilience of the human spirit.
